Today, the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) awarded $8.6 million in grants to support and improve transit for 25 American Indian Tribes and Alaska Native communities. The grants, awarded through FTA’s competitive Tribal Transit program, will help improve transit service for tribal residents, many of whom rely on buses as their only option to get to jobs, school, and other opportunities.
FTA’s Tribal Transit Program is authorized by Congress to support public transportation for federally recognized American Indian Tribes and Alaska Native villages, groups, or communities. The funding helps Tribes to meet the needs of their citizens, including elders, people with disabilities, and youth in rural areas.
