FTA Issues Safety Advisory 22-4: Suicide Prevention Signage on Public Transit
Published on: December 8, 2022
Today, FTA issued Safety Advisory 22-4 to encourage transit agencies to implement, update or expand suicide prevention signage and messaging campaigns that apply best practices for reducing suicide attempts.
Suicide is the leading cause of fatalities on public transit in the United States, with most suicide events occur on heavy rail infrastructure. In addition to the loss of life, suicide events cause immense psychological harm to bystanders and vehicle operators who witness the event. Research suggests that suicide prevention signage is an intervention that can save lives, especially if it includes a hotline or crisis center information.
