FINAL REMINDER: FTA Seeks Public Comment on Updates to the National Public Transportation Safety Plan by 7/31/23
Published on: July 23, 2023
As part of continuing efforts to enhance transit safety for transit workers and riders across the county, FTA published proposed updates to the National Public Transportation Safety Plan in the Federal Register. Submit your comments on the proposed updates to the docket by July 31, 2023.
The National Public Transportation Safety Plan is FTA’s primary guidance document to improve transit safety performance on all federally supported public transportation systems and includes best practices, tools, technical assistance, voluntary standards and other resources. FTA’s proposed updates align with the U.S. Department of Transportation’s goal to make our transportation systems safer for all. The proposed updates would replace the original plan published in January 2017 and incorporate Bipartisan Infrastructure Law requirements.
While the National Public Transportation Safety Plan is not a regulation and does not impose mandatory requirements, it creates a blueprint for transit agencies to adopt stronger safety measures. FTA updated the plan to include voluntary minimum safety standards and recommended practices for improving public transportation safety.
