FTA Announces Approximately $631 Million in Grants to Replace Aging Passenger Railcars in Three Transit Systems
Today, FTA announced the selection of three projects in three states to replace aging passenger railcars. These selections represent second-time funding from the Rail Vehicle Replacement Program, which was created to improve safety, service, and customer experience on subways, commuter rail, and light rail systems.
Older railcars contribute to service delays and increased costs. They may also lack accessibility features – such as direct access into the railcar – for people with disabilities or anyone pushing a stroller. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law invests a total of $1.5 billion in funding through FY2026 for railcars under this program.
