FTA Resources Available in Advance of Census Data Release

The 2020 Census urban area delineations will directly impact the funding distribution and eligibility of FTA’s formula grant programs and some discretionary programs. As FTA prepares for the Census Bureau’s upcoming release of final urban area boundaries, FTA encourages grant recipients to visit our census landing page to access new resources, including:

• FTA 2020 Census Frequently Asked Questions – Frequently asked questions regarding the 2020 Census and its implications for FTA recipients.
• FTA Program Requirement Impacts of 2020 Census Changes – Briefly describes scenarios for FTA recipients whose population changes result in updated program requirements.
• FTA Formula Factors Table – Describes factors affecting FTA funding under various formula programs.

The Census Bureau projects new urban area boundaries will be published in December 2022, and the new urbanized area data will impact the FY 2024 apportionment. It will have no impact on funding apportioned in FY 2023 or earlier. Recipients are encouraged to contact their regional FTA office or FTA2020Census@dot.gov with questions.
